World cup players

England may not be the favourites to lift the World Cup but English football is the clear winner when it comes to the global game. An analysis of the newly-released 23-man squad lists for the 32 competing countries (published in UK’s Telegraph) highlights the global reach of the English game. Nearly 15 per cent of the 736 players going to Brazil ply their trade in the Premier League.

Manchester United will be the best represented English club with 14 of its line-up playing for their native lands, followed closely by Chelsea which sees 13 of its number making the trip to Brazil. Every Premier League side will have at least one player at the tournament. Meanwhile FC Barcelona will have 13 players at the tournament and Real Madrid will have 12. Fascinating analysis.
