Barely three weeks after the late Patrick Sawyer, first victim of Ebola disease came into Nigeria, new report says Lagos State now has eight suspected cases of the killer disease.

Those inflicted with the disease are said to be the people who came into contact with Sawyer last month.

DailyPost reports that the doctor, who treated the victim, has been down with the dreaded disease.Patrick Sawyer

Patrick Sawyer, a liberian citizen confirmed as first ebola victim in Nigeria.

Lagos State Health Commissioner, Jide Idris also said six other people, who had made contact with Sawyer, had been quarantined but were not showing symptoms, adding that one Ebola case has been confirmed.

Authorities have been monitoring anyone who came into close contact with Patrick Sawyer, a Liberian and U.S. citizen, who died of Ebola in Lagos last month shortly after arriving at the airport.

With reports that British Airways has suspended flights from London to Liberia and Sierra Leone over the Ebola outbreak, there is serious risk that flights to and fro Nigeria may follow suit. This will pose problems for thousands of Nigerians on summer holidays. As expected, the world is monitoring the situation and Lagos State Health Commissioner, Jide Idris and his team MUST be commended for there proactive approach to curtailing this killer disease.

Currently there is no licensed vaccine for Ebola. Several are being tested but are not available for clinical use.

The World Health Organisation reviews the public health situation regularly, and recommends travel or trade restrictions if necessary. The risk of infection for travellers is very low since person-to-person transmission results from direct contact with bodily fluids of victims. (Daily Mail – UK)
