Today is Muhammadu Buhar’s birthday. He is 72 years of age.
According to entries in wikipedia, Buhari was born on December 17, 1942 into the faith of Islam. He is a native of Daura in Katsina State of Nigeria and his ethnic background is Fulani.
A soldier by profession, before he changed his military uniform to the now familiar white garment, he was the military ruler from 31, 1983 to August 27, 1985 and has also ran unsuccessfully for the office of the President of Nigeria in the 2003, 2007 and 2011 elections.
The term Buharism is ascribed to the Buhari military government in reference to his economic principles and political ideology of his then military government.
Now, the quiet but disciplined military turned politician is going for his fourth attempt of running for he office of the President of Nigeria.
Will he be 4th time lucky? Only time will tell.
On his birthday, the APC have given him a gift in the person of Pastor Professor Yemi Osibajo of the Redeemed Christian Church of God with Pastor E.A Adeboye, as the General Overseer.
In the meantime, the President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan found time, and probably ignored his special adviser Doyin Okupe to congratulate Buhari on his72nd birthday anniversary.
In a statement yesterday (Tuesday), the special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati said President Jonathan in a congratulatory letter addressed to the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in next year’s presidential election prayed that God Almighty should grant him many more years of good health and personal fulfilment.
“As you mark your 72nd birthday anniversary, I write on behalf of my family, the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to extend warm felicitations to you. I join your family, friends, and well-wishers to thank God for your life and to pray that He continues to guide, guard and prosper you even as He blesses you with many more years of abounding health and personal fulfillment,” President Jonathan wrote.
He went ahead to wish General Buhari a very happy birthday, the statement concluded.
Now, that is how politics ought to be played. Civility is a requirement in our politics.
What do I know about Buhari’s gift?
I don’t know the man personally but I have had indirect dealings with him and I have friends that have dealt with the man directly.
What I have been told is that the man Professor Yemi Osibajo is a straight forward man. A man who will not bend rules for anyone. Several people have informed me that Yemi Osibajo is a man that can resign whichever position he holds in order to protect his integrity. He is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). He is firm and strictly adheres to the rules and laws of the Federation. He is well connected as to be expected and he may not be a politician, but what he will bring to the table is his integrity, his finesse and orderliness.
I must confess, I was distracted with Prof. Yemi’s non ability to bring votes to APC, but here I dare say I was completely wrong. The votes he would bring to the party are massive.
As a Pastor, a recognised one at that in the Redeemed Christian Church of God, this automatically makes the wide spread parishes of the church his constituency. You can bet Redeemed members campaigning for a member of their flock.
After a lot of wasting of time in my opinion, as I have opined on several social media platforms, the position of a VP ought to have been concluded a while back instead of all the politicking on the pages of newspaper which could have risked damaging the APC party.
It will be interesting to see the angles Doyin Okupe and Femi Fani-Kayode and their cohorts will attack this formidable pair of Nigerians with integrity.
